Is Donald Trump Deporting 3.7 Million Nigerians? Here’s the Truth

GoldenNewsNg reports that a recent social media claim suggested that newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump plans to deport 3.7 million Nigerians. The claim, which gained massive attention online, has sparked debates and raised concerns among Nigerians in the U.S. and beyond.

The Claim

On January 20, a Twitter user with the handle @Zaddy_Bruh posted that Donald Trump would deport 3.7 million Nigerians, starting January 21. The tweet also listed other countries allegedly facing mass deportations, including Zimbabwe, Ghana, Mozambique, and Bangladesh.

The tweet claimed Nigeria was at the top of the list, with 3.7 million slated for deportation. Despite no official backing, the post went viral, amassing over 3 million views and thousands of interactions.

What Did Trump Actually Say About Deportation?

Donald Trump has always been vocal about immigration policies, including his controversial stance on illegal immigration. During his first tenure as president, Trump introduced several measures to curb illegal immigration, such as:

  • “Remain in Mexico” Policy: This policy required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their U.S. immigration cases were processed.
  • Expanded Deportation Powers: Trump signed executive orders giving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) broader authority to target undocumented immigrants.

However, there is no record of Trump making specific comments about deporting 3.7 million Nigerians

Can Deportations Happen Overnight?

Mass deportation on the scale claimed in the viral tweet is practically impossible. Deportation in the U.S. involves a legal process that cannot be executed overnight. Here’s how it works:

  1. Detention by ICE: Undocumented immigrants/non-citizens are usually detained at an ICE facility.
  2. Immigration Court: A judge reviews the case to determine whether deportation is warranted.
  3. Legal Appeals: Detainees often have the right to appeal their cases, which can delay the process.

This multi-step process means the claim that millions could be deported in a single day is entirely false.

Verdict: False Claim

There is no evidence to support the claim that Trump has ordered the deportation of 3.7 million Nigerians or any other nationalities. No official U.S. government statement or credible media report confirms this allegation.

The viral post appears to be misinformation, possibly aimed at stirring fear and confusion.

Birthright Citizenship Policy Update

On a related note, Trump did sign an executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship for children born on U.S. soil to undocumented parents.

Summary

The claim that Donald Trump plans to deport 3.7 million Nigerians lacks any factual basis. While Trump has a history of tough immigration policies, this specific allegation is nothing more than a viral rumor. Nigerians in the U.S. should remain informed through credible sources and avoid falling for unverified claims.
