An Italian hospital carrying out human trials has said it had inoculated a first volunteer with an anti covid- 19 vaccine.
The lady who was not named received the first dose developed by Rome-based biotech company REI Thera at the capital’s Spallanzani institute.
Ninety volunteers divided into groups by their age will participate in the trials to test the efficacy of different dosage of the vaccine that has been in development since March.
The vaccine which has passed pre clinical test on animal models will take at least 24 weeks to complete phase 1 of the human trials said GiuseppeI Ippolito, the scientific director of the institute.
“Having an Italian vaccine means not being slaves and servants of other countries that will say me first.”
The vaccine would be ready for use by spring 2021.
