There are several subdivisions within anatomy, including:

  1. Gross Anatomy: This involves the study of structures that can be seen with the naked eye, such as organs, bones, and muscles. It often involves dissection and examination of cadavers.
  2. Microscopic Anatomy: This branch focuses on the study of structures that can only be seen through a microscope. It includes Histology (the study of tissues) and Cytology (the study of cells).
  3. Developmental Anatomy: This field examines the changes in structure that occur during the development of an organism, from conception to adulthood.
  4. Comparative Anatomy: This branch compares the anatomical structures of different species to understand evolutionary relationships and adaptations.
  5. Radiographic Anatomy: This involves the study of the body’s structures using medical imaging techniques, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans.

Anatomy is an essential foundation for many other fields in medicine and biology, including physiology (the study of how the body functions), pathology (the study of diseases), and surgery. It provides a detailed understanding of the human body, allowing healthcare professionals to diagnose diseases, develop treatment plans, and perform surgical procedures with precision.

JAMB Cut Off Mark For Anatomy

To pursue a degree in Anatomy, aspiring students need to meet certain criteria, including achieving a specific JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) cut-off mark. The cut-off mark determines the minimum score required to participate in the Post UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) and gain admission to study Anatomy. In this article, we will explore the JAMB cut-off marks for Anatomy and how universities calculate the aggregate score for admission.

JAMB Cut Off Mark for Anatomy

The JAMB cut-off mark for Anatomy to participate in the Post UTME is set at 200. However, it is important to note that some State Universities may accept a lower score of 180. Nevertheless, for most universities, except private ones, the minimum JAMB score accepted for Anatomy is 180.

Polytechnics and Anatomy

It is worth mentioning that while Polytechnics generally accept lower JAMB scores for various programs, they do not offer Anatomy as a course of study.

Admission Likelihood

The likelihood of being admitted to study Anatomy with a JAMB score of 200 or 180 (depending on the university) is relatively low, estimated at around 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. However, a low JAMB score does not entirely eliminate the possibility of admission. For instance, with a score of 215, there is still a chance of being admitted because the JAMB score only constitutes 50% of the admission requirements.

Other Admission Requirements

The remaining 50% of the admission requirements is derived from the Post UTME, O’ level exams (such as Waec/NECO/Nabteb), or a combination of both, depending on the university’s aggregate grading system. Therefore, a low JAMB score can be compensated by performing well in the Post UTME or O’ level exams.

JAMB Cut Off Mark That Guarantees Admission

A JAMB score of 240 is considered good for studying Anatomy in any university in Nigeria. With a JAMB score of 240 or above, the chances of being admitted to study Anatomy in any university of your choice increase significantly, reaching approximately 70%. The reasons for this will be explained when we discuss how schools calculate aggregate scores for admission.

Calculating the Aggregate Score for Anatomy

Different universities (Federal, State, and Private) adopt various methods to compute the aggregate scores for admission into the department of Anatomy. Some universities consider both JAMB and Post UTME scores (e.g., University of Benin), while others take into account JAMB and O’ level results (e.g., University of AAU). Additionally, some universities use JAMB, Post UTME, and O’ level results (e.g., University of Lagos) to calculate the aggregate scores.

Weightage of JAMB Score

Regardless of the calculation method used by your preferred university, your JAMB score will always carry a weightage of 50% in the calculation. To determine this, your JAMB score is divided by 8.

Calculating the Average for Anatomy

To calculate your average score for Anatomy, the following methods are used depending on the university’s calculation pattern:

  1. For schools using Post UTME and JAMB: Your JAMB score is divided by 8, and your Post UTME score is divided by 2, to determine your total average.
  2. For schools using O’ level, Post UTME, and JAMB: Your JAMB score is divided by 8, and then added to 30% of your Post UTME score and 20% of your O’ level score to calculate the remaining 50% of the aggregate score.
