Thiago Alcantara, Liverpool’s recently signed midfielder, has tested positive for coronavirus and is self isolating, the club said on Tuesday.
Thiago was signed from Bayern Munich few weeks ago, in a deal worth up to £25m and made his debut in the 2-0 win at Chelsea last week.
He was a surprise absentee from Liverpool’s squad for Monday night’s 3-1 win over Arsenal, but his omission has now been explained.
Liverpool in a statement on the club’s twitter account said, “Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently self isolating according to the necessary guidelines.
“The club has and will continue to follow all protocols relating to Covid-19 and Thiago will remain in self isolation for the required period of time.”
The premier league had earlier announced 10 positive cases in the latest round of testing, the highest number since testing began.
