Manchester United Captain Harry Maguire has told BBC Sport he feared for his life and thought he was being kidnapped during his arrest in Greece.
The former Hull City defender had been arrested, tried and convicted all in the space of a few days in the Greek Islands of Syros, where he had gone on holiday during the off season.
“I thought we were getting kidnapped. We got down on our knesd, we put our hands in the air, they just started hitting us,” he said.
“They were hitting my leg saying my career’s over. No more football, you won’t play again.
“And at this point I thought there is no chance these are police or I don’t know who they are so I tried to run away, I was in that much of a panic, fear, scared for my life. All the way through.”
Maguire who claimed the incident had taken place outside of a police station, was trying to get younger sister Daisy to a hospital as she was losing consciousness after being approached by two men.
Manchester United had in a statement said Maguire no longer had a criminal record and was free to travel internationally, while he awaits a full trial in a more senior court which will probably not happen until the new year.
