Mali Crises Talks In Deadlock

After series of talks between West African Countries under the auspices of ECOWAS and Mali’s new junta, a deal is still to be reached following last week’s coup, the two sides said.

In another twist of development, ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita no longer wished to resume office after ECOWAS broached the idea during discussions.

The ECOWAS team led by Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan, wanted an immediate return to constitutional order

The junta’s spokesman colonel Ismael Wague in a statement said, “There were discussions on both sides, given that at this stage nothing has been set down or decided and the final architecture of the transition will be defined by us.”

Jonathan on his part said, “We have agreed on a number of issues, but there are some issues that we have not agreed. So on these issues we told the military officers the thinking of ECOWAS and asked them to go and review.
