Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted many students from Bethel Secondary School in Maramara, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
GoldenNewsNG gathered that the bandits stormed the school on Monday early morning around 2 am and started shooting sporadically before kidnapping the scores of students.
Although Kaduna Police Command have not confirmed the number of students abducted, a source who pleaded for anonymity said that the gunmen kidnapped many students but four escaped and ran back to the school.
“The students told us that two soldiers were shot by the bandits, they could not confirm if the soldiers are still alive or not,” the source told The Nation.
“It is difficult to say this is the number of students that were abducted. Even the students that escaped were still in state of confusion and could not tell the number of their mates the bandits went away with.”
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammed Jalige said a joint security team comprising the Police, Army and others have rescued 17 of the abducted students.
“Yes, I can confirm to you that there was an incident at the school but the joint security team comprising the Police, Army and others have rescued 17 students.
“We cannot say this is the number of students kidnapped for now. As soon as that information is available, we will issue a statement, ” Jalige said.
It was gathered that the parents and relatives of the abducted students have reported at the boarding school which marked its 30th anniversary on 19 January.
