NELFUND Disburses ₦1bn to 8,266 Students at the Federal University of Kashere

GoldenNewsNg reports that the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Professor Umaru Pate, has commended the Federal Government for the launch and execution of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), revealing that no fewer than 8,266 students from the institution have so far benefited from over ₦1 billion in student loans.

Professor Pate made this known on Tuesday during a press briefing held at the university in Gombe State, ahead of its upcoming 6th to 9th convocation ceremonies. The events will mark the award of diplomas, degrees, prizes, and conferment of honorary doctorate degrees.

“The president has done extensively well for this university in the past year. Over 8,266 students at this university alone have benefited from ₦1,073,966,500 through NELFUND. The Federal Government paid their service charges and monthly upkeep,” he stated.

Describing NELFUND as the most impactful education initiative in recent years, Pate said no other programme in the last two decades has had such a direct impact on the lives of students across the country.

Breakdown of Graduating Students

Speaking on the upcoming convocation, Professor Pate announced that 6,870 undergraduates will be graduating, with 91 students achieving first-class honours.

Graduation statistics include:

  • 91 First Class (1%)

  • 1,899 Second Class Upper (28%)

  • 3,917 Second Class Lower (57%)

  • 960 Third Class

  • 3 Pass degrees

Of the total graduating students, 4,791 are male, making up roughly 70% of the class, while 2,079 are female. The university management noted that the gender gap remains a challenge and that efforts are ongoing to encourage higher female enrolment.

With thousands of students already benefiting from NELFUND loans, and more expected to be added to the list in the coming weeks, the Federal University of Kashere hopes to continue expanding access to quality education for underserved populations.

Professor Pate emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting national development by producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
