According to a confirmation statement issued by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sunday O. Elom, the funds were released on 11th September 2025 under the fifth batch of disbursements.

“I hereby confirm that our university received payment for 427 students amounting to a total of ₦83,032,300 (Eighty-Three Million, Thirty-Two Thousand, Three Hundred Naira only) as the 5th batch disbursement under the Students Loan Programme,” Prof. Elom stated.

The development reflects NELFUND’s continued effort to strengthen educational financing and reduce the burden of tuition and related expenses on Nigerian students.

The scheme, introduced to widen access to higher education, is designed to provide interest-free loans and targeted funding for students across public tertiary institutions in the country.

Student Reactions on Upkeep Delays

While welcoming the tuition disbursements, some students expressed frustration over the delayed release of upkeep allowances, which they said has stretched their ability to meet daily living expenses on campus.

“Tuition fees are being paid, but the upkeep funds have been delayed for months now,” one beneficiary said. “We are grateful for the support, but without timely upkeep disbursement, many of us struggle to cope with feeding, transport, and other basic needs.”

Another student urged the Fund to prioritise both tuition and upkeep payments, stressing that academic success depends not only on fees being covered but also on having a stable livelihood while studying.

Broader Outlook

Stakeholders have described the initiative as a major step toward reducing dropout rates, promoting equal access to education, and empowering young Nigerians to pursue their academic goals without financial hindrance.

With this latest disbursement, more students at Alex Ekwueme Federal University are expected to continue their studies with greater financial stability, though the issue of upkeep delays remains a pressing concern for many.
