NELFUND: FG Disburses N2.08bn Student Loan to 20,919 Undergraduates in North-West
The Federal Government has released N2.086 billion through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support undergraduates across the North-West region.
Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Katsina State, Alhaji Mukhtar Lawal-Tsagem, announced the development during a one-day sensitisation programme in Katsina on Tuesday. The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to highlight the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Lawal-Tsagem revealed that a total of 20,919 students in higher institutions across the zone benefitted from the interest-free loan scheme, which is designed to ease the financial burden of tuition and study needs.
He noted that beyond education, the Federal Government had also rolled out interventions in agriculture, infrastructure, and security in the region.
“In Kebbi, wheat farmers in 12 local government areas were supported under the NAGAP programme, while ginger farmers in Kaduna received N1.6 billion support. The N2 billion Yawuri Water Scheme is another Federal Government-backed project already impacting lives in the North-West,” he said.
Speaking further, Lawal-Tsagem explained that one of the core functions of the ministry is to inform citizens about government programmes and policies while encouraging public support and participation.
In a paper presentation at the event, Adamu Muhammed, a lecturer at Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, urged residents of the North-West to appreciate and sustain goodwill with the current administration in order to attract more development projects.
He also challenged political representatives at the state and local levels to be more accountable.
“You have people representing the masses at the grassroots, receiving hundreds of millions every year, yet very little is seen in terms of development. Citizens must demand accountability from them,” he said.
