The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the release of ₦120 billion from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), to boost the Federal Ministry of Education’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative. This development is part of a renewed effort to equip Nigerian youths with practical skills that can lead directly to employment or self-reliance.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, NELFUND will take full responsibility for financing the training process, including the complete payment of training fees for all qualified applicants. This means that eligible Nigerians won’t have to pay a kobo to participate in the programme. This is  a major relief for many young people who want to learn a skill but are held back by lack of funds.

“This move aims to empower Nigerian youth with practical, job-ready skills,” the Ministry noted. With unemployment rates still affecting millions across the country, especially among young graduates, this initiative comes at a critical time. It offers a real opportunity for individuals to learn relevant trades like electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, ICT, fashion design, and other technical skills that are in demand both locally and internationally.

Sources close to the programme confirmed that training is expected to commence soon, although an exact start date has not yet been announced. However, preparations are already ongoing, and prospective applicants are advised to stay informed and ready.

The most encouraging part of the plan is that participants will receive funding directly through NELFUND, ensuring a smooth and transparent process. The goal is to make skill acquisition more inclusive, especially for young Nigerians who are eager to work but need the right tools to get started.

For many, this programme could be the turning point that leads to self-employment, career stability, or even small business creation. Interested applicants are encouraged to stay alert as application details will be made public in the coming weeks
