The federal government has disclosed the roster of members constituting the new minimum wage committee tasked with proposing a revised national minimum wage for the country.
GOLDENNEWSNG outlines that the 37-member Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage will be led by Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
As per the statement issued on Sunday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, the committee is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. It emphasized that members are expected to arrive early for security clearance and be seated at the Council Chamber by 11:30 am, with the inauguration set to commence at 12:00 noon at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja.
The announcement of the Committee’s inauguration follows the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Committee’s composition spans representatives from the Federal Government, State Government, Private Sector, and Organized Labour. Federal Government members include officials like Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Hon. Minister of State, Labour and Employment, and Mr. Wale Edun, Hon. Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy. State Government representatives include governors such as Alh. Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State (North Central) and Sen. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State (North East).
Moreover, representatives from organizations like the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), National Association of Small and Medium Enterprise (NASME), and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) are also included. Organized Labour is represented by figures from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
It’s noteworthy that the existing N30,000 minimum wage, enacted during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, is set to expire on April 18, 2024.
