Nigerian Students Traveling To UK : It is crucial for Nigerian students traveling to the UK to be aware of the United Kingdom’s upcoming plans, despite their excitement about the process.
According to an exclusive report by The Sun UK, the number of Nigerian students bringing over their relatives has risen significantly, reaching 59,053 students who brought more than 60,923 relatives, surpassing the figures from 2019. Due to these alarming statistics, the UK is preparing to make announcements that will impact Nigerian students pursuing their Master’s degrees in the country. However, it’s important to note that these decisions will not solely affect Nigerian students, but also students from other nations.
While we anticipate the official announcement, here is what we currently know:
Under the new UK immigration policy, all master’s students and many other postgraduate students will be prohibited from bringing their families with them.
One positive aspect of this policy is that the ban will not apply to PhD students. PhD courses typically last between 3 and 5 years and require a high level of skill, as reported by UK media sources.
This move aligns with reports indicating that net migration into the UK has risen to 1 million, leading Tory MPs to urge the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to take control of the escalating numbers.
To address the growing number of student immigrants, UK ministers are expected to announce stricter immigration measures on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
According to The Sun’s report, “Rishi Sunak is expected to address the immigration issue, highlighting that these figures are from the period ending December 2022, which predates his appointment as Prime Minister by two months.
“There has been a significant surge in individuals coming to Britain by piggybacking on their relatives’ student visas.
“Last year alone, students brought 135,788 family members to Britain, a nine-fold increase compared to 2019.
“Nigerian students alone brought over 60,923 relatives.”
“It is imperative that we regain control of the situation.”
