The union wants the government to refund workers’ funds allegedly diverted from the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and immediately constitute the governing board of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).

The resolution was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of the NLC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, held at its headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The meeting was presided over by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and focused on issues affecting workers, the trade union movement, and the country at large.

History of Recent Labour Actions Under Tinubu
Since the start of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have repeatedly taken nationwide action over economic and labour-related issues.

  • August 2, 2023: Strike notice in protest against the removal of fuel subsidy.

  • September 2023: Two-day warning strike against economic policies.

  • February 27–28, 2024: Nationwide protest over rising living costs and unmet agreements.

  • June 3–4, 2024: Indefinite strike to demand an increase in minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦494,000, which was suspended after one day of talks.

  • July 18, 2024: Agreement reached with government for a ₦70,000 minimum wage.

If the government fails to meet the NLC’s latest demands, the August 13, 2025, notice could lead to the fourth full nationwide strike under the current administration.
