UNICEF, NYSC, and NPC Partner to Enhance Birth Registration in Nigeria

In a collaborative effort to enhance birth registration in Nigeria, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), National Population Commission (NPC), and UNICEF have formed a valuable partnership. This strategic alliance aims to provide digital birth registration services in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), benefiting an estimated 12 million under-5 children in Nigeria.

Key Points:

  • NYSC will deploy 850 corps members as coordinators and supervisors to oversee the birth registration process.
  • NPC will offer training and support to the corps members, in addition to recruiting ad hoc birth registrars at the ward level.
  • UNICEF will provide technical expertise and support for data collection and analysis.

Significance of the Partnership:

The collaboration between UNICEF, NYSC, and NPC represents a significant step forward in improving birth registration in Nigeria. Currently, only 40% of children in the country are registered at birth, leading to adverse consequences such as reduced access to essential services, increased vulnerability to exploitation, and limited opportunities for education, employment, and social mobility.

How the Partnership Works: The partnership operates as follows:

  1. NYSC deploys 850 corps members as coordinators and supervisors for birth registration.
  2. NPC provides training and support for the corps members while recruiting ad hoc birth registrars at the ward level.
  3. UNICEF contributes technical expertise and aids in data collection and analysis.

Implementation:

The partnership will be implemented in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Rivers, and Sokoto.

Benefits of the Partnership:

The collaboration between UNICEF, NYSC, and NPC is expected to yield several benefits, including:

  • Increased birth registration coverage, raising it from the current 40% to a minimum of 80% in Nigeria.
  • Improved access to essential services, such as education, healthcare, and social protection, for registered children.
  • Reduced vulnerability to exploitation, including child labor, trafficking, and forced marriage.
  • Enhanced opportunities for education, employment, and social mobility for registered children.
