NYSC Breaks Silence on Viral Case of ‘Corper Raye’, Denies Political Motive in Withheld Certificate

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed the controversy surrounding Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as “Corper Raye,” whose Certificate of National Service (CNS) was allegedly withheld despite completing her service year.

In a statement on Sunday, the NYSC dismissed claims that the action was linked to her criticism of the government, stressing that disciplinary reasons were behind the decision.

According to the scheme, Uguamaye, with state code LA/24B/8325, is among 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for “valid disciplinary reasons.” The NYSC explained that her service year was extended by two months for failing to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance, in line with its bye-laws.

“This extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case. The principle of equal treatment was applied, and the matter should not be politicized,” the statement read.

Raye, who served in Lagos State, gained public attention after a viral video in which she lamented the rising cost of living in Nigeria. On Saturday, she alleged via Instagram that her Local Government Inspector refused to clear her during the April clearance despite her presence.

The case has sparked public outcry, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar describing NYSC’s action as “unacceptable” and calling for immediate justice. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore also condemned the decision, vowing to challenge what he termed “gross injustice.”

While Raye insists she complied with all clearance requirements, the NYSC maintains its decision is purely procedural and in line with long-standing disciplinary practices.
