Career of Peter Obi

Peter Obi began his business career sometime around 1984. He is most known for becoming the youngest ever chairman of Fidelity Bank PLC. He has worked at Guardian Express Bank PLC and Next International Nigeria Limited as a manager.

He became a member of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2003 and ran for governor of Anambra State. He and Chris Ngige were both running for governor of the state. Despite the fact that Ngige was declared the winner, Obi refused to give up and resorted to the court. After a three-year battle, the court overturned the ruling, and Obi was appointed Governor on March 17, 2006.  After Obi was impeached in November of 2006, his deputy, Virginia Etiaba, took over as governor. Obi, on the other hand, refused to abandon justice and the rule of law. Andy Uba was elected Governor of Anambra during the 2007 general election in Nigeria by the PDP (People’s Democratic Party). On June 14th, 2007, the Supreme Court agreed that Obi’s tenure in office had not expired and reinstated him.

He was then given the opportunity to finish his first term in office. He was re-elected in 2010, and he was given a second four-year term, which concluded in 2014. He is thought to have done excellent job for Anambra, since both the infrastructure and economy have improved significantly under his leadership. During his rule, Anambra became the first state in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement Sub-Sovereign Wealth Savings. At a period when many other Governors were leaving massive debts, I left an investment portfolio of $500 million dollars, as well as local and foreign cash, including $156 million in dollar-denominated bonds. Ambassadors and High Commissioners from notable nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, the European Union, South Africa, Belgium, Israel, the Netherlands, and Canada, among others, visited the State for the first time. Anambra had been designated as a pariah state by the Diplomatic Corps and international development partners before to my arrival. He also advocated for funding intended for any intervention project to be sent directly to the point of usage. Willie Obiano took over as his successor.

Peter Gregory Obi Biography and Timeline

On October 12, 2018, Peter Obi was named as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate in the Nigerian 2019 Presidential elections. His party came second.

Obi was chairman of Next International Nigeria Ltd, then chairman and director of Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Ltd, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Future View Securities Ltd, Paymaster Nigeria Ltd, Chams Nigeria Ltd, Data Corp Ltd and Card Centre Ltd. He was the youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc. He was recently appointed the chairman of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) by former President Goodluck Jonathan after the 2015 general election.

On 7 February 2010, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Peter Obi the winner of the 6 February 2010 gubernatorial elections, where he defeated Professor Charles Soludo, former governor, CBN. This election victory gave Governor Obi an additional four years as the governor of Anambra State. On 17 March 2014 Peter Obi served out his second term and handed over the governorship to Willie Obiano.

Obi once again left office on 29 May 2007 following the general elections, which Andy Uba won. Obi returned to the courts once more, this time contending that the four-year tenure he had won in the 2003 elections only started to run when he took office in March 2006. On 14 June 2007 the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Obi’s contention and returned Obi to office. This brought to an abrupt end the tenure of Obi’s successor, Andy Uba whose April 14, 2007 election the Supreme Court nullified on the grounds that Obi’s four-year tenure should have remained undisturbed until March 2010.

After nearly three years of litigation, Ngige’s victory was overturned by the Court of Appeal on 15 March 2006. Obi took office for on 17 March 2006. On 2 November 2006, he was impeached by the state house of assembly after seven months in office and was replaced the next day by Virginia Etiaba, his deputy, making her the first-ever female governor in Nigeria’s history. Obi successfully challenged his impeachment and was re-instated as the governor on 9 February 2007 by the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu. Etiaba handed power back to him after the court ruling.

Peter Obi contested in the Anambra State governorship election as candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party in 2003, but his opponent, Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic Party, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Obi married Margaret Brownson Usen in 1992, and together they have two children: Gabriella Nwamaka Frances Obi and Gregory Peter Oseloka Obi. He’s a devoted Catholic..
