Peter Obi Criticizes Federal Government Over Increase in International Passport Fees
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent hike in international passport fees in Nigeria, describing it as another burden placed on struggling citizens.
In a statement, Obi noted that the cost of obtaining a passport has now risen to ₦100,000 for a 32-page booklet and ₦200,000 for a 64-page booklet—the third increase in just two years.
He argued that in a country where the new minimum wage is only ₦70,000, it is unacceptable that the price of a single passport now exceeds the monthly salary of workers. According to him, this makes Nigeria “probably the only country in the world” where such a situation exists.
“The obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary and continues to reveal its apparent disconnect with the people and the suffering. Instead of making life easier, this government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians,” Obi stated.
He described the development as alarming, adding that it reflects poor governance priorities and deepens the economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
