Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Gregory Obi, has taken legal steps against activist Deji Adeyanju over a series of alleged defamatory statements made on social media.

In a letter dated 26th August 2025, issued by his solicitors, Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co., Obi demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from Adeyanju for what he described as “malicious, false, and grossly defamatory” claims published on his social media handles.

According to the letter, Adeyanju had repeatedly accused Obi of:

  • Using religion to campaign (“religious bigot”)
  • Mismanaging Anambra State funds during his tenure as governor
  • Attempting to bribe social media influencers
  • Being a fraud, scam, and “leader of the mob”

The solicitors argued that these statements were deliberately aimed at damaging Obi’s reputation before Nigerians and the international community. They also claimed that the comments were widely circulated on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Facebook.

The letter cited multiple posts dating as far back as 2022, including allegations that Obi diverted billions of naira into his family businesses and attempted to silence critics with money.

Obi’s lawyers insisted that the activist’s description of him as “an anarchist” and “leader of the mob” falsely painted him as someone who incites unrest.

The legal team has now demanded:

  1. A full retraction of the defamatory statements
  2. A public apology to be published on the same social media platforms where the allegations were made

Failure to comply, they warned, would lead to further legal action.

This development marks another chapter in the heated exchanges between political figures and activists in Nigeria’s post-election space, especially around the role of social media in shaping public opinion.
