Several Motorcyclists and people suspected to be hoodlums protested along the Kara-OPIC-Berger end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Friday, burning tyres and threatened to block the over-congested road that is under construction by the Julius Berger contractors.
According to an eye-witness, pandemonium began when a police officer attached to Julius Berger contractor shot a motorcyclist, popularly known as ‘Okada’ while he was riding over the portion under construction by the contractor.
GoldenNewsNg gathered that as at the time the reporters visited the scene, all the workers have vacated, leaving behind a few vehicles that were packed along the portion of the road that is under construction.
It was also gathered that after the policeman shot the cyclist, other cyclists on the other side of the road, crossed over to mob the casual workers and engineers on duty, setting out firearms to burn their vehicles and block the road.
The incident that took place around 10.45am on Friday complicated the traffic congestion along the road inward Lagos.
It took the intervention of a reinforcement of a police squad to disperse the protesters.
Several motorists that spoke with Saturday INDEPENDENT condemned the act of the police officer. They equally called on the Federal government to be sensitive to the endless pains of road users on this axis. According to them, the Federal government has not done enough in its supervisory role on the project awarded to Julius Berger contractors, saying, several lives have been lost since the inception of the project and “it appears those in charge of supervising the project have compromised standard, allowing Julius Berger to do the work at their own will.”
