New federal protections for same-sex and interracial couples were signed into law by Joe Biden, the president of the United States.
This marked the culmination of a personal and national development on an issue that has gained acceptance over the past decade.
Goldennewsng reports that the White House said that Biden’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act on the South Lawn in front of thousands of invited guests reflected the moment’s significance.
Marriage is an easy decision. Who do you cherish? And are you going to be faithful to the one you love?” From South Lawn, the president posed the question. It’s not more muddled than that.”
Biden stated that the legislation he was about to sign guarantees the federal government’s “protections that come with marriage” and acknowledges that “everyone should have the right to answer those questions for themselves without the government interference.”
Biden stated, “We denied interracial couples and same-sex couples from these protections for the majority of our nation’s history.” It did not treat them with the same respect and dignity. In addition, this law now requires an interracial marriage, and every state must recognize same-sex marriage as legal.
The Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman, is officially null and void under the new law. It requires states to honor marriage licenses issued outside of their borders, including interracial and same-sex unions.
