The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a Federal Government agency tasked with developing indigenous human capacity to meet the demands of the oil and gas industry.

As part of its mission, the PTDF is calling for applications from interested and qualified Nigerians for the 2023/2024 Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctorate scholarships in Nigerian Federal Universities.

Method of Application

  • Online Application: Access the application via the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal: scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng. Detailed instructions are available on the portal, and applicants are encouraged to review the requirements before proceeding.

Important Notes for Applicants

  • Applicants must obtain a National Identity Number (NIN) before applying and verify it beforehand (NIMC verification charges apply).
  • Previous beneficiaries of PTDF scholarships for the same or lower degree category cannot reapply.
  • Current beneficiaries of other scholarships need not apply.
  • Application is limited to Federal Universities and specific courses.
  • Part-time studies admissions are not considered for any application category.

Criteria for In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS) Postgraduate

  • Evaluation includes class of degree, academic transcripts, professional qualifications, and relevant publications.
  • Membership in professional bodies is considered.
  • Viability of study/research plan (for PhD applicants).
  • MSc applicants must submit a statement of purpose outlining reasons for the study, relevance to the oil and gas industry, and expected impact on national development.
  • PhD applicants are required to submit a research proposal not exceeding 6 pages, covering various aspects such as topic, methodology, expected outcomes, relevance to the industry, and references.
  • Final-year postgraduate applicants need not apply.
  • Shortlisted postgraduate applicants will undergo oral interviews before final selection.

ISS MSc (Requirements for Application)

  • Full-time admission letter into any Federal University.
  • Minimum Second-Class lower (2.2) in an Oil and Gas related field.
  • Course of study must be related to Management and Oil & Gas industry.
  • Minimum of 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (maximum 2 sittings), preceding the first degree.
  • National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption.
  • Certificate of indigeneship.
  • Personal statement of at least 1000 words explaining reasons for the chosen course of study.

ISS PhD (Requirements for Application)

  • Full-time admission letter into any Federal University in Nigeria.
  • Minimum Second-Class lower (2.2) in an Oil and Gas/Management related field.
  • Merit in a second-degree certificate in an Oil and Gas related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (maximum 2 sittings), preceding the first degree.
  • National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption.
  • Certificate of indigeneship.
  • Research area must be relevant to the Oil and Gas industry.
  • PhD research proposal not exceeding 6 pages, accessible via the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal.

Documents to be Uploaded by Postgraduate Applicants

  • Scanned copies of required documents must be attached to the online application forms.
  • Documents must be legible and in PDF format (except passport photo) with appropriate file sizes as indicated on the portal.
  • Required documents include certificates, admission letter, personal statement, NYSC certificate, WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results, and certificate of indigeneship.
  • Additional documents are needed for PhD applicants, including second-degree certificates or statements of results and the research proposal.

PhD Research Areas

  • Provided to assist applicants in choosing a research area.
  • Details available on the PTDF Scholarship Portal.

Criteria for In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS) Undergraduate

  • Applicants must be full-time students in Federal Universities in Nigeria.
  • Currently in 200 level of study.
  • Course of study must be related to the Oil & Gas industry.
  • Possess 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Valid admission letter into the University is mandatory.
  • Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4, equivalent to 2.2 in the first year.
  • Transcripts for the first year of study must be provided, signed and stamped by relevant university authorities.
  • Only undergraduate applicants in Oil and Gas related fields will be considered, selection based on transcript grades.

Documents to be Uploaded by Undergraduate Applicants

  • Evidence of WAEC/SSCE/NECO results with 5 credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Admission letter.
  • First-year academic transcripts.
  • Certificate of indigeneship.
  • Personal statement of at least 300 words explaining reasons for the chosen course of study.

Deadline for Application

  • The application portal is open from May 13th to June 24th, 2024.
