The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced a temporary delay in the May 2025 payment schedule for a specific group of grant beneficiaries. This strategic move is designed to encourage these individuals to visit SASSA offices and verify or update critical personal information.

According to SASSA, the affected individuals are those who receive social grants using alternative forms of identification instead of the standard 13-digit South African ID number. In collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, SASSA discovered that many of these beneficiaries do, in fact, have valid 13-digit ID numbers recorded in the national database—yet these IDs are missing or incorrectly listed in the SASSA system.

To correct this, the agency is requiring affected grant recipients to physically report to their nearest SASSA office. Once verified, their correct 13-digit ID numbers will be captured into the system. Failure to comply with this process may result in the suspension of their grants. Continued noncompliance could even lead to the grant being permanently discontinued.

Additionally, SASSA is targeting a second group of beneficiaries identified through its bulk means test process. These are individuals suspected of receiving undisclosed income in other bank accounts, which may affect their eligibility for continued social assistance.

Under Regulation 30 of the Social Assistance Act, SASSA reserves the right to review any grant if there is reason to believe a beneficiary’s financial or personal circumstances have changed. Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA’s National Spokesperson, emphasized the importance of this process:

“A person may have been eligible at the time they applied for the grant, but if their material conditions have improved, they might no longer qualify. Our reviews help us ensure fairness and compliance.”

Letsatsi further noted that the agency will step up efforts during the 2025/2026 financial year to monitor beneficiaries more closely. Monthly reviews will be conducted to identify clients who need to confirm or update their personal details.

Importantly, the verification initiative is also part of a broader internal investigation into potential fraud. SASSA is probing for signs of collusion between staff members and external individuals who may be exploiting the grant system to siphon money meant for the vulnerable.

“This process is not only about verifying beneficiary information but also about strengthening our systems against abuse,” added Letsatsi.

This development highlights SASSA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining integrity within South Africa’s social welfare programs while ensuring that only eligible citizens continue to benefit.
