Serena Williams secured her place in the quarter finals of the ongoing US open on Monday, overcoming the impressive Maria Sakkari in three set.
It took the mother of one 2hr 28 min to wear down the Greek 25 year old 6-3, 6-7 (6/8) in an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows.
The 38 year old will now face one of Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova or France’s Alize Cornet for a place in the semi finals.
Should the former world number 1 make it all the way to the final, Williams would equal Margaret Court’s 24th grand slam haul, the most for women’s grand slam single titles.
