The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the emergence of Nigeria as third best in Africa and 28th globally in a recent English Proficiency Index ranking.

Goldennewsng understands that the Education First ranking, which was released in November 2022, was for countries classified as non-native English speaking.

Twenty African countries appeared in the ranking, with South Africa ranked 12th globally and first in Africa, while Kenya ranks 20th globally and 2nd in Africa, and Nigeria emerges third best in Africa and 28th globally.

Others on the list in Africa are Ghana which ranked 41st globally and 4th in Africa, and Uganda, which ranked 55th globally and 5th in Africa, amongst others.

The Netherlands stands at the number one global spot, while Singapore takes the second position in the EF EPI 2022 edition was calculated using test data from 2.1 million test takers in 2021.

Reacting to the development in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Monday, Sowore said ranking Nigeria as the third Best English-Speaking Nation In Africa and 28th globally is a colonial mentality.

He wrote: “Nigeria Ranks 3rd Best English-Speaking Nation In Africa, 28th Globally” – Colonial Mentality!”
