  1. What is an FBI file? An FBI file, also known as an FBI record, is a collection of documents and information that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) compiles on individuals or entities during the course of their investigations or background checks. These files can be on both individuals and organizations, and they cover a wide range of topics and activities. The information in an FBI file can come from various sources, including surveillance, interviews, tips, or even publicly available information.
  2. Who is Bola Tinubu? Bola Tinubu is a prominent Nigerian politician who has been a significant figure in the country’s political landscape. who is currently the president of Nigeria,  he also served as the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was a former governor of Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital. His political influence extends beyond Lagos State, as he is known for playing a crucial role in the formation of the APC and supporting the party’s presidential candidates in Nigeria.
  3. Reasons for having an FBI file: There are several reasons why an individual might have an FBI file. Some of these reasons include:
    • Criminal Investigations: The FBI investigates various criminal activities, including white-collar crimes, organized crime, cybercrime, terrorism, and public corruption. If an individual is suspected of involvement in any criminal activity within the jurisdiction of the FBI, the bureau may open a file on them.
    • National Security Concerns: The FBI is responsible for counterintelligence and national security investigations. If an individual is believed to be a threat to national security or is involved in activities that may harm the country’s interests, the FBI might create a file on that individual.
    • Background Checks: The FBI conducts background checks for various purposes, including security clearances, immigration processes, and employment screening. These checks may lead to the creation of an FBI file.
    • Public Figure and Public Interest: Public figures, especially those involved in politics, may come under scrutiny, leading to the compilation of information by various agencies, including the FBI. This could be due to their potential impact on national policies and security.
  4. Limitations and Privacy Concerns: It’s important to note that the existence of an FBI file on an individual does not necessarily imply guilt or wrongdoing. FBI files can also include inaccurate or misleading information. Access to these files is generally restricted to authorized personnel, and individuals may request access to their own FBI files through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

What’s in Bola Tinubu’s FBI file?

What is contained within Bola Tinubu’s FBI file is a matter of interest for many Nigerians. In the United States, there is a belief that almost every citizen has an FBI file, although this may not be entirely true. Typically, FBI files are maintained for activists, troublemakers, and individuals involved in illegal activities such as financial fraud, murder, and drug trade. When someone becomes an adversary of the U.S. Justice Department, the FBI opens a file on them. As Bola Tinubu is the president-elect of Nigeria, it is likely that he has a substantial FBI file.

In the U.S., any individual can request their own FBI file through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and the FBI is legally obligated to provide it, though some parts may be redacted for security reasons. If Bola Tinubu were to sign a FOIA form authorizing the release of his FBI file, any Nigerian in the United States could obtain it.

The importance of these files lies in the fact that powerful intelligence agencies around the world, such as the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), often spy on African leaders and influential individuals, collecting information that could be used for leverage or exploitation. If they find compromising information about a leader or their associates, they could use it to achieve their country’s goals. This practice has historically led to leaders being manipulated or blackmailed into acting against their countries’ interests, and it is believed to have had detrimental effects on African countries’ development.

Regarding Bola Tinubu specifically, there have been discussions about his alleged Guinean citizenship and whether he committed perjury by not disclosing it on official forms. World intelligence agencies likely possess extensive information about Tinubu, including details of his past, educational background, and financial transactions. While Nigerian media may take years to uncover certain information, these intelligence agencies already have it at their disposal.

The contents of Bola Tinubu’s FBI file could potentially be used as leverage by foreign intelligence agencies, influencing his decisions as Nigeria’s president. For those who are aware of these potential infractions, the contents of the FBI file could be pivotal in determining the future of Nigeria under Tinubu’s leadership.
