The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is a paramilitary agency of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria tasked with regulating import and export activities, as well as combating smuggling and other illegal activities at the borders.

The salary structure of the Nigeria Customs Service is comparable to that of the Immigration and Air Force because it is based on the Consolidated Naval Salary Structure (CONNESS), which was introduced in 2017.

The Nigeria Customs Service ranks are structured as follows:

1. Comptroller General
2. Deputy Comptroller Generals
3. Assistant Comptroller Generals
4. Comptroller
5. Deputy Comptroller
6. Assistant Comptroller
7. Chief Superintendent
8. Customs Officer
9. Deputy Superintendent
10. Customs Officer
11. Assistant Superintendent of Customs I
12. Assistant Superintendent of Customs II
13. Inspector of Customs
14. Assistant Inspector of Customs
15. Customs Assistant

The Nigeria Customs Service is organized into six departments:

1. Excise and Industrial Incentives
2. Technical Services
3. Enforcement and Drugs
4. Investigation and Inspection
5. Finance, Administration, Tariff, and Trade
6. Economic Research and Planning

 

The salary structure for Nigeria Customs Service officers, updated for 2024, is as follows:

1. Customs Assistant: ₦398,506 – ₦450,321
2. Assistant Inspector of Customs: ₦457,358 – ₦511,484
3. Inspector of Customs: ₦523,014 – ₦597,065
4. Assistant Superintendent of Customs II: ₦878,956 – ₦908,991
5. Assistant Superintendent of Customs I: ₦1,102,562 – ₦1,123,535
6. Deputy Superintendent Customs (DSC) Officer: ₦1,134,027 – ₦1,252,030
7. Chief Superintendent Customs (CSC) Officer: ₦1,168,172 – ₦1,335,234
8. Assistant Comptrollers: ₦1,235,584 – ₦1,445,449
9. Deputy Comptrollers: ₦1,629,447 – ₦1,825,589
10. Comptrollers: ₦1,749,829 – ₦1,946,281
11. Assistant Comptroller General: ₦2,262,288 – ₦2,474,560

Additionally, Nigeria Customs Service officers receive various benefits and allowances, including:

1. General Services allowance
2. Hazard allowance
3. Utility allowance
4. Detective allowance
5. Uniform maintenance allowance
6. Furniture allowance
7. House maintenance allowance
8. Personal Servant
9. Torchlight allowance
10. Hardiness allowance
11. Plain-Cloth allowance

 

The salary for Nigeria Customs Service graduates varies based on their qualifications:

1. Customs Assistants: For those with an SSCE certificate, the salary ranges from ₦398,506 to ₦450,321 annually.

2. Assistant Inspectors of Customs or Inspectors of Customs: Individuals with National Diploma or NCE certificates are appointed to these ranks and receive salaries ranging from ₦457,358 to ₦594,484 annually.

3. Assistant Superintendents of Customs II: Graduates with a BSc or HND degree join at this rank and receive salaries ranging from ₦878,956 to ₦1,008,991 annually.
