In Nigeria, 22 universities offer Theatre Arts as a degree course. To gain admission into any of these universities, students must meet the specified WAEC and JAMB subject combinations for Theatre Arts. These requirements may vary slightly from one institution to another, so it is important to check with each university to ensure that you meet their specific criteria.

However, it is important to note that Theatre Arts graduates in Nigeria have limited job opportunities to explore. While the course provides students with essential skills in communication, creativity, and critical thinking, the job market for Theatre Arts graduates is highly competitive. Salaries also vary widely depending on the employer, industry, and level of experience. Theatre Arts graduates typically earn between ₦35,000 and ₦2,000,000 net per month.

Despite these challenges, Theatre Arts remains a fascinating and rewarding course of study that can lead to careers in theatre production, film, television, radio, and the media industry. To succeed in this field, students must be dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about the performing arts.

We also provide additional resources on this webpage to help students navigate their Theatre Arts journey, including A-level requirements, list of universities offering the course, and student guides on what to expect while studying this degree.

WAEC Subject Combinations For Theatre Arts

When registering for WAEC, NECO, or GCE for a Theatre Arts degree, students are allowed to register for a maximum of 9 subjects. However, students may register for less than 9 subjects if they are resitting. It is important to note that at least 5 credit passes are required amongst the 9 subjects listed below in order to be considered for admission into any Nigerian university offering a Theatre Arts degree.

The core subjects that must be passed with a credit (indicated in red below) include:

  1. English Language
  2. Mathematics
  3. Literature in English
  4. Government/History
  5. One Nigerian Language (Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba)
  6. Economics/Commerce
  7. Fine Arts/Creative Arts/Music
  8. Religious Studies/Civil Education/Social Studies
  9. Any other subject

If a student fails any of the core subjects, it is important to check with the specific university’s special requirements for the Theatre Arts course to see if they will accept another subject in lieu of the failed one. It is also important to note that while a pass in other subjects (indicated in blue) is allowed, a higher grade in these subjects can enhance a student’s chances of admission into the university.

JAMB subject combination for Theatre Arts

In addition to the O level subject combination, students who intend to study Theatre Arts in any Nigerian university are required to register for 4 subjects in JAMB, with English Language being compulsory. The cumulative score from both the JAMB and POST UTME scores will be used by the university to determine a student’s eligibility for admission into the programme.

To increase their chances of admission into a Theatre Arts degree programme, students are advised to score a minimum of 180 in JAMB. While a score between 160-170 upwards may still lead to admission, it is important to note that candidates with higher scores have a better chance of being admitted. Students may use the JAMB Admission Simulator to evaluate their chances of admission based on their JAMB scores.

The four JAMB subject combinations required for Theatre Arts are:

  1. English Language
  2. Government
  3. Literature in English
  4. Any Nigerian Language

It is important for students to carefully study and understand the admission requirements for their desired universities and programmes in order to make informed decisions and increase their chances of being admitted.
