When the Abubakar Bukola Saraki led senate failed to confirm Mr Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) many people thought that they were just playing politics with his confirmation.
All attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress then to get him confirmed failed based on some reports from the Department of State Security (DSS) which had some incriminating corruption claims against him.
Sraki has both left the position of senate president and senator and a new APC led senate is in charge. However, they have also not confirmed Magu as the substantive EFCC boss. He has remained in acting capacity since his appointment by President Buhari.
The EFCC is a watchdog for all financial and economic crimes in Nigeria but the eagle eyes on its logo seemed to have looked too close this time. Reports that the acting chairman of the commission Ibrahim Magu was arrested is still very shocking to Nigerians.
Magu would have completed his 5th year as the acting chairman of the FCC but it seems that he may not survive the current crisis surrounding him.
Members of the opposition People’s Democratic Party PDP are also calling on the embattled acting EFCC chairman to step down.
President Buhari who came to power on the promise of fighting corruption entrusted Ibrahim Magu with the responsibility of spearheading the war against corrupt government officials in the country. The campaign has been largely described by the presidents loyalists as successful due to Magu’s effort.
But his recent ordeal suggests that there are many people in the ruling party who are against him. Although they remain faceless, they are coming after him with more confidence now than before because the alleged cabals in Buhari’s government may have been disbanded following the demise of the well respected late chief of staff.
