‘More Women need to be empowered to boost Nigeria’s economy’- Prof. Kuta Yahaya

A Don from the University of Ibadan, Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya has called for citizens engagement for successful women’s economic development, adding that for Nigeria’s economy to improve more women need to get empowered exonomically.

Speaking at a two day Capacity Training for Women Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on Advocacy and Communication workshop organized by the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) under the Advancing women economic development in Nigeria (PAWED) in Minna, an expert in Agriculture Extension and Forestry from the University of Ibadan, Prof. Yahaya said it is a strategy for growth and inclusion.

It should be noted that the sum of One hundred million US dollars ($100million) has been earmarked as intervention fund from the World Bank.

He said over the weekend that the training which is an advocacy Project designed to empower women in eighteen local government areas (3 LGAs each) from Six states of the country, including Niger, Abia, Edo, Kebbi, Taraba and Ogun is key to the development of the country.

Professor Yahaya, a former Secretary to the Niger state government further urged the CSOs to build their capacities in advocacy before engaging in promoting change in the society.

Some of the CSOs drawn from Open Government Partnership (OGP) and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) called for inclusive engagement as a veritable strategy to develop the Nigerian women.

Co-chairman, OGP in Niger state, Samuel Yisa said there is the urgent need to build women capacity for the society to get developed.

The leader of FOMWAN in Niger state, Hajia Awal Abdullahi said the best decision of a nation is to empower its women economically, adding that the training will afford them new strategies to ensure that they achieve their goals.
