Abba Kyari enrolled for the Nigeria Police Force and was trained at the Police Academy Wudil, Kano. He became a police officer on 1st May 2000, getting the rank of the Assistant Superintendent of Police.
In 2018, at age 43, about 18 years after he became a police officer, Abba Kyari was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), which made him the second youngest officer to receive such rank in the history of the Nigerian Police Force.
Before Abba Kyari was suspension over allegation of involvement in fraud, he served in Adamawa, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. During his years of service, he headed the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as the Officer-In-Charge, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team.
