Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has played down rumors that he might join the presidential campaign of Peter Obi, the candidate for the Labour Party (LP).
Goldennewsng reports that Obasanjo stated that he does not belong to any political party and would therefore not participate in any campaign.
The Africa Leadership Group hosted a virtual engagement during which he spoke.
In a letter to Nigerian youths discussing their choices for leaders, the former president had endorsed Obi.
Opposition politicians harshly criticized Obasanjo.
Nevertheless, Obasanjo stated: I am not traveling with the campaign. I have made clear things with the help of my experience.
I am not a member of any political organization. I won’t get on any train for the campaign. I have stated what is in the nation’s best interest.
In addition, the former president attributed the issue in Nigeria to poor leadership.
“Leadership is the reason Nigeria is where it is today.
He went on to say that “we must decisively look for men and women who have the character, attributes, skill, and attitude that we need for leadership, that will deliver in this country,” and that they must be found.
