Muhammed Usaini Gumel, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, has issued a warning to politicians ahead of the general elections in 2023.
Goldennewsng reports that he urged the general public to actively participate in the promotion of uniformity of intent among electorates, candidates for elective office, and government and security officials.
In a statement that was signed by Sanusi Abubakar, the media relations officer for the command, the CP also warned politicians about violating the Electoral Act.
Gumel says that secret voting and voting by unregistered people are examples of electoral crimes.
Unfair influence, snatching or destroying election materials, and impersonating an electoral official are among the other examples. Other examples include vote-buying or selling with money, disorder at polling locations, incorrect voting, and false statements.
The Command reiterated its determination to take decisive action against violators in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, and other existing laws in light of the foregoing.
“However, the command is equally using this medium to bring to the notice of law abiding citizens in the State, particularly political parties and candidates to prevail on their members and followers to always note and remain guided on the provisions of the aforementioned electoral offences,” reads a portion of the statement.
“Finally, the Command wishes to express its appreciation for the continued cooperation of all critical stakeholders, particularly those who attended its inaugural stakeholders colloquium, as well as the subsequent support and comprehension the command is receiving during the ongoing campaigns of political parties.
“In particular, the command appreciates the overwhelming support from the NBA, Judiciary, media houses, NUJ, Zonal NBC, and the umpire INEC for everything they are doing to educate the public and encourage them to continue promoting the widespread distribution of the jingles series that the police command is rolling out,”
