The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education stands as a tribute to exceptional and innovative efforts made by individuals, institutions, and organizations in advancing girls’ and women’s education.
As the inaugural UNESCO Prize of its kind, it serves as a platform to highlight successful endeavors that enhance and advocate for the educational opportunities of girls and women, thereby enriching their lives.
Generously supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, this Prize is granted annually to two laureates, each receiving a grant of US $50,000 to further their initiatives in the realm of girls’ and women’s education.
Since its inception in 2016, the Director-General of UNESCO has conferred this prestigious Prize.

Requirements for UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women Education:
Eligibility Criteria: To qualify for the UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Nomination by a National Commission or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, or by an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO.
- Demonstration of significant contributions towards the advancement of girls’ and women’s education.

How to Apply: Nomination Process:
- Nominations can be submitted via the dedicated online platform in English or French by a National Commission or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO of the concerned Member State, or by an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO. Nominations from Member States must be validated by the Permanent Delegation, while those from NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO must be validated by the organization’s headquarters.
- National Commissions and Permanent Delegations to UNESCO may access the online submissions platform through their official UNESCO account using the provided link: http://unesco.org/gwe.
- NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO will receive direct access to the online platform upon request to the Secretariat. To request access, please contact GWEPrize@unesco.org
- Candidates may complete the online nomination form directly upon request from the nominating entity (National Commission, Permanent Delegation, or NGO in official partnership with UNESCO). Access to the platform will be granted by the Prize Secretariat.
- Nominations must be submitted via the online platform by midnight on May 24, 2024 (UTC+1, Paris time). Each nominating entity (Member State or NGO in official partnership with UNESCO) is limited to a maximum of three nominations.
