The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address its long-standing demands or face a nationwide strike.
Rising from its National Executive Council meeting held on September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University), the union accused the government of neglecting public universities and failing to implement agreements reached since 2009.
ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said the patience of university lecturers had been stretched, warning that failure to act would trigger industrial action. According to him, the union will first embark on a two-week warning strike, followed by a total and indefinite strike if nothing is done.
He listed the demands to include re-negotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, improved funding and revitalisation of universities, payment of outstanding 25–35 percent salary arrears, settlement of promotion arrears and third-party deductions, and an end to alleged victimisation of members at LASU, KSU and FUTO.
Piwuna recalled that rallies held across campuses in August 2025 to draw government attention yielded no results. He urged Nigerians, including parents, students, and stakeholders, to press the government to act, describing the ultimatum as a final alarm to prevent a collapse of the academic system.
