Tems Early Life

Tems was born to a British father and a Nigerian mother on June 11th, 1995. She spent her early years in the United Kingdom, but after her parents divorced when she was five, she was forced to move back to Nigeria. After moving back to Nigeria, Tems stayed with her mother and brother in Ajah, Lagos State.

After finishing high school at Dowen College, she went to South Africa to earn a degree in economics.

Tems Music Career

Tems has always had a great admiration for songs. Growing up, Tems’s music passion was influenced by listening to the likes of Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Adele, Alicia Keys, Ass, Aaliyah, Burna Boy, and many more. Tem’s high school music teacher recognized her natural talent and began working with her on her singing and other musical skills.

When she was 17, she joined the choir. Together with her brother who plays the guitar, Tems will freestyle with various songs. During her time in the choir, Tems was lucky to find someone who first took her to the studio. Tems continued to pursue her love of music throughout her time at college. She persisted in her vocal practice, free-styling with a wide range of songs and even penning a few original pop songs.

her career in music began when, at age 20, she released an EP titled “Time Swap EP” in 2013. However, the song didn’t make many breakthroughs as she expected, however, this never discouraged her.

When she got back to Nigeria from college, Tems got a job as a digital marketer, but she eventually left to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a professional musician. Lucky for her, she made the right call because in 2018, her debut single “Mr. Rebel” was widely acclaimed. Mr Rebel gained a lot of praise and approval from Nigerians, especially on social media. A year later, Tems dropped “Try me,” which became another huge hit and propelled her to even greater fame. Since the release of the song, Try Me, has gained over 2 million views on YouTube.

Tems has persisted in carving out a special place for herself in the music business. Released in September of 2020, her EP “For Broken Ears” was a poignant reflection on the trauma of losing a hearing ear. A single off the album, titled “Damages,” has been causing a ruckus in the music business.

In 2020, Tems and fellow Nigerian Davido collaborated on an Afrobeats remix of Khalid’s “Know Your Worth,” which was produced by Khalid and featured on his self-titled 2020 album. That same year, her collaboration with Wizkid on their song “Essence” earned her a number one spot on BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart.

Tems attended Dowen College located at Lekki Phase 1 where she obtained her O’level certificate before going abroad (South Africa) for her Tertiary education. Due to her glaring love and perceived passion for music at school she was noticed by her music teacher and she learned the piano and this made her practice singing with her brother’s guitar accompaniment.
