Why Many Students May Lose Access to Nelfund Upkeep Loans

We have received information that the Federal Government has approved a total sum of N19.24 billion. This amount will be allocated towards the training of 50,000 non-graduate N-power beneficiaries and the procurement of a taxiway lighting system at the Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja airports. This investment aims to enhance the skills and opportunities for non-graduate N-power beneficiaries while also improving the infrastructure and safety measures at these airports.

According to the latest updates, the Federal Government has allocated the sum of N19.24 billion for specific purposes. Firstly, a portion of this fund will be utilized to train 50,000 non-graduate N-power beneficiaries. The aim is to equip them with essential skills that will enhance their employability and income-generating potential. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering the youth and reducing unemployment rates in the country.

Additionally, a significant portion of the approved fund will be allocated towards the procurement of a taxiway lighting system. This system will be installed at the Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja airports. The implementation of taxiway lighting will improve the safety and efficiency of aircraft movement on the taxiways, especially during low-light conditions or adverse weather. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and operational standards of key airports in the country.

The allocation of funds for both the training of non-graduate N-power beneficiaries and the procurement of the taxiway lighting system highlights the government’s multi-faceted approach to address youth empowerment and infrastructure development.

During an extraordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House in Abuja, several financial allocations were disclosed by government officials. These include the expenses for consultancy services associated with the Dadin Kowa 40MW power project in Gombe State and the furnishing of the 10-story headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency in Lagos.

In addition, four federal agencies, including the National Institute of Transport Technology and Industrial Training, were authorized to provide training for 50,000 non-graduate N-Power beneficiaries over a nine-month period. The total cost of this engagement is N14.21 billion, inclusive of 7.5% VAT.

The non-graduate category of the N-Power program focuses on training participants in various sectors such as agriculture, hospitality, construction, ICT, and creative industries. During the training period, participants receive a monthly stipend and are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to either establish their own businesses or secure employment in their chosen fields.

Efforts to Address Payment Delays

The Npower management has apologized for the delay in payment of stipends and work is still ongoing to pay backlogs for beneficiaries who had previously verified their account information. However, beneficiaries are being asked to exercise patience as payment will soon begin. A few weeks ago, the Honourable Sadiya Umar Farouq had declared that the Npower initiative would continue as long as the future administration was led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), providing some reassurance for beneficiaries about the program’s continuity.
