NPower Funding Boost: FG Approves N19.24bn for Training and Infrastructure Development

In a major development for the NPower initiative, the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has granted its approval for a substantial amount of N19.24bn. This funding is intended to address two key areas: training 50,000 non-graduate NPower beneficiaries and supporting various infrastructural projects across the country.

Funding Breakdown

The approved sum will be distributed as follows:

NPower Training: N14.21bn has been allocated to train non-graduate NPower beneficiaries. This training will be carried out by four federal agencies: the National Institute of Transport Technology, Industrial Training Fund, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, and the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute.

Infrastructure Development: N3.05bn will be utilized for procuring taxiway lighting systems at the Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja airports. Additionally, N605m has been earmarked for consultancy services for the Dadin Kowa 40MW power project in Gombe State. Furthermore, N1.3bn will be utilized for furnishing the 10-storey headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency located in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Impact on NPower Program

Sadiya Farouk, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Social Development, and Disaster Management, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the NPower program, which is currently in Batch C. The minister acknowledged the achievements of the four federal agencies involved and presented the proposed funding allocation to the Council for approval.

The Minister also highlighted the positive impact of the homegrown school feeding program, which has contributed significantly to reducing the number of out-of-school children nationwide.

Notable Developments

Aviation Leasing Company: The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced the council’s approval for the establishment of an aviation leasing company. This initiative will enable entrepreneurs in civil aviation to lease equipment affordably within Nigeria, fostering growth and development in the sector.

Dadinkowa Hydropower Project: The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, shared the FG’s approval of N605m as a five-year consultancy fee for supervising the Dadinkowa 40MW hydropower project.

Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency: The Minister of State for Transportation, Ademola Adegoroye, disclosed the approval of N1.3bn to cover furniture costs for the newly-acquired 10-storey building of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency in Victoria Island, Lagos.

New Universities Approval

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, revealed that the FG has granted approval for the establishment of 37 new private universities nationwide. This recent decision brings the total number of universities approved for establishment under the Buhari-led government to 72, including 14 Federal Universities, 21 State Universities, and 37 Private Universities.

Conclusion

The recent approval of funding by the FG signifies a positive step towards enhancing the skills of non-graduate Nigerians, improving infrastructure nationwide, and expanding educational institutions. With these investments in human capital and physical infrastructure, Nigeria aims to achieve significant socio-economic development and educational advancement in the years to come.
