The National Examination Council (NECO) is pleased to announce that registration forms for the 2023 session of the Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) for Senior Secondary School are currently available for purchase. Please read the following guidelines for registration.

Registration Guidelines for the 2023 BECE

  1. Eligibility Requirements
  • Only candidates in their final year of Junior Secondary School (JSS3) are eligible for registration. School principals must ensure compliance with this requirement.
  1. Registration Procedure
  • The 2023 BECE registration will be conducted both offline and online.
  1. Claiming School’s Online Portal
  • Schools need to claim their online portal by using their official email address and phone number. It is mandatory for schools without official email addresses to create one (personal or cybercafé emails are not allowed).
  • This step helps establish a comprehensive database. Claiming the school’s online portal is the first task before commencing offline/online registration. Schools must input their information accurately.
  • After submitting the details, the school will receive a default password via the official email address, which will be used for login purposes.
  1. Offline Registration
  • Schools must install the 2023 BECE offline application by downloading it from the Council’s website: www.neco.gov.ng.
  • The application is used to enter all candidates’ biodata. A user manual with step-by-step registration procedures can also be downloaded from the website.
  • Schools should ensure that all prospective candidates are registered offline, allowing for progressive online uploading upon payment of registration fees.
  • Note: A candidate is considered registered only when their offline entries are uploaded online to obtain a registration number. Online upload is possible only after payment of registration fees.
  1. Visually Impaired Candidates
  • Visually impaired candidates should be registered like any other candidate. However, their disability should be correctly indicated when entering their bio-data. There are two categories for visually impaired candidates: low vision and complete blindness.
  1. Offline Validation
  • After successful offline registration, schools must perform offline bio-data validation before uploading the registration data online.
  • Candidates should review and make corrections to their name, picture, date of birth, sex, subjects, etc., during this validation process before uploading the registration online.
  • Please note that the Council is not responsible for any registration errors committed by schools. All errors must be corrected during the validation process before online upload.
  1. Procedure for Offline Validation
  • After completing offline registration, schools must print the offline photocards of all candidates from the offline application and issue them to each candidate.
  • Candidates should confirm that their picture, name, state, local government area (LGA), date of birth, sex, and chosen subjects are all correct on the photocards.
  • If errors are found, candidates should correct them on the photocards and sign in the appropriate column. If there are no errors, candidates should simply sign the appropriate column.
  • All signed photocards should be returned to the registration official for corrections in the offline application.
  • Note: All corrections must be made offline.
  • Once all corrections have been made, the validation list should be printed for candidates to sign against their respective names. The signed offline validation list, along with other validation documents, must be returned to the respective NECO State Offices.
  1. Activation for Payment
  • Before payment and upload can be made, all schools must be activated by the NECO State Coordinator of each state and FCT.
  • Validation documents, including the validation list signed by candidates, candidates’ signed photocards, entry schedule duly endorsed by the State Ministry of Education (where applicable), and subject analysis, must be returned to the NECO State Offices for activation.
  1. Payment/Upload Procedure
  • All payments must be made strictly through the school’s online NECO portal.
  • After successful payment, the registration quota is allocated according to the amount paid into the NECO TSA.
  • Schools can then select individual candidates to upload (if the payment is not for all candidates) by checking the selection boxes next to each candidate’s name or by using the “check all” box for all candidates if the payment is for all.
  • For installment payments, the initial payment should be made for at least 20 candidates to avoid additional fees.
  • The payment receipt will be sent to the school’s email address or can be printed from the transaction history in the school profile.
  • Once registration is complete, schools should print the final validation list and have all candidates sign against their respective names.
  • The payment receipt and the signed final validation list, including candidates’ registration numbers, should be endorsed by the School Principal/Commandant before submission to the NECO State Office.
  • The final photocards, which bear candidates’ registration numbers, will be used for admission to the examination hall(s).
  1. Examination Fees
  • Registration fee for the 2023 BECE is N8,700.00 per candidate.
  • Unviable Centre fee is N12,500.00.
  • The syllabus costs N1,500.00 per copy.
  • Late registration incurs an additional penalty of N2,000.00 per candidate.
  • The registration fee for BECE Re-sit is N3,000.00 per subject per candidate.
  • Note that Stamp Duty, Service, and Remita charges apply.
  1. Minimum Number of Candidates
  • Schools must register a minimum of 20 candidates. Schools registering fewer than 20 candidates will be deemed unviable and will need to pay an unviable center fee of N12,500.00 if they wish to hold the examination in their school.

Procedure for BECE Resit Registration

  • Log in to your school profile using your center number, username, and password.
  • Select “Re-sit.”
  • Choose the payment option (card payment, bank branch, USSD, internet banking, or wallet) and proceed with the payment.
