In the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, a standout performer for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, played a crucial role in eliminating Angola. Lookman, emerging as the starman for Nigeria in the tournament, previously scored two goals to help defeat Cameroon in the round of 16.
Despite Nigeria showing promise in attack during the quarter-final game, they initially lacked composure in the penalty box. However, in an intense encounter, a breakthrough came in the 41st minute through an unstoppable counter-attack. Alex Iwobi initiated the play, passing to Moses Simon, who advanced into the penalty box before delivering the ball to Lookman. The Atalanta forward capitalized on the opportunity, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and placing the ball on the left side of the net.
Lookman’s goal against Angola marked his third in the tournament, establishing him as the fourth Nigerian to score three or more goals in the history of AFCON knockout stages. Despite continued efforts in the second half, the Super Eagles were unable to secure a second goal, with a disallowed goal by Victor Osimhen due to offside.
Angola had a chance to equalize, hitting the bar, but the Nigerian defense successfully cleared the ball. Despite late pressure from Angola, the Super Eagles secured a 1-0 victory, advancing to the semi-finals.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to face either Cape Verde or South Africa in the semi-final stage of the 2023 AFCON on February 7.
