Academic activities in Nigeria’s universities may soon be disrupted, as lecturers prepare for nationwide protests across branches. GoldenNewsNg gathered that this is a prelude to a possible nationwide strike, which could end over two years of uninterrupted academic activities.
A member of ASUU’s National Executive Committee (NEC) revealed that a meeting will soon be convened to approve the protests and decide on further industrial action.
In a communiqué released on Tuesday, August 19, ASUU accused the federal government of foot-dragging on unresolved issues and rejected plans to conscript the union as a guarantor under the Tertiary Institutional Staff Support Fund scheme introduced by the Tinubu administration.
The NEC member confirmed that while mobilisation is ongoing, strike remains on the table if the federal government fails to act.
The planned protests raise concerns among students and parents, who fear another round of disruptions in the academic calendar. With rising economic hardship, many argue the country cannot afford another setback in the education sector.
Earlier, reports confirmed that staff unions of Lagos State University (LASU) also declared an indefinite strike, shutting down operations across its campuses over unresolved welfare issues.
