The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has interrogated numerous civil servants in connection with the financial scandal engulfing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Senior officials, including the suspended Minister Betta Edu, former minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq, and the suspended National Coordinator Halima Shehu, are subjects of the investigation. Edu is under scrutiny for approving the transfer of N585 million to the private account of ministry accountant Bridget Oniyelu, while Umar-Farouq is facing allegations of N37 billion money laundering.
Halima Shehu is being questioned for allegedly diverting N44 billion from the National Social Investment Programme funds into private and corporate accounts without presidential approval. Senior civil servants in the ministry and bank officials are providing valuable information to the EFCC in their efforts to uncover financial wrongdoing.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Betta Edu on Monday after she allegedly requested the payment of N585 million into private accounts intended for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos States.
