The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has carried out its largest operation yet, arresting 792 suspects involved in cryptocurrency and romance scams in Lagos. Among those apprehended are 114 Chinese nationals, 40 Filipinos, two individuals from Kazakhstan, one Pakistani, and one Indonesian.
The suspects were arrested in a seven-story building in Victoria Island, Lagos, where they were allegedly training Nigerians to execute romance and investment scams. The EFCC recovered high-end desktop computers and over 500 SIM cards from Nigerian telecommunications companies at the scene.
Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesperson, revealed that the foreign suspects helped create fake profiles for their Nigerian accomplices, who then targeted victims from countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and parts of Europe. Using platforms like WhatsApp, the suspects engaged victims in fake romantic and investment schemes, redirecting them to a fraudulent platform called www.yooto.com.
The EFCC began tracking the operation weeks ago and secured a warrant to raid the building. Uwujaren confirmed that the suspects are in custody and will be arraigned soon.
This breakthrough underscores the EFCC’s determination to combat financial crimes and protect individuals from online scams.
