2. Edo 2020: I Pray To Lose This Election If… – Governor Obaseki

Edo state incumbent GovernorGodwin Obaseki has declared that he has no interest in anyone’s blood spilling as a result of his second term bid.

In a statement titled, “My reelection not worth spilling of blood – Obaseki’, and sent by Obaseki’s Special Assistant on Media, Crusoe Osagie, the governor said: “Ordinarily, an election is supposed to be a contest where people go to sell their ideal, and citizens in their own free will go and vote for those ideals they believe in; it shouldn’t be one where people will do anything to get power.

“Election should not be one in which we shed blood because the election will always come. If you die in an election, you will not be there in the next one to vote. So, there is no need for violence.”

4. Edo 2020: Wike Predicts Outcome Of Election, Advises Buhari

The governor of Rivers State, south-south Nigeria, Nyesom Wike, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to use the Edo State governorship election as a model for a refined electoral process.

“Let every one that loves this country ensure that the Sept. 19, 2020 election is credible, free and fair. The Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), should show Nigerians that they can support credible elections.

“INEC should ensure that result sheets are not in the hands of individuals. Security Agencies should not whisk away collation officers and later bring them back with cooked results. Complete manipulation of the electoral process causes violence.”

5. Edo Decides 2020: NAOSRE Calls For Harmony

Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, the National Association of Online Security Reporters, NAOSRE, has cautioned security agents, election observers, stakeholders, and voters to play by the stipulated rules to avoid security breaches.

Arising from its general meeting on September 17, the association harped on the need for security consciousness by all the players saying that loss of life in the course of election defeats the reasons for democratic elections.

The association, therefore, calls on all concerned parties including political parties, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security operatives and the generality of Edo people to embrace peace during and after the conduct of the polls.

Speaking during the general meeting, NAOSRE’s interim President, Favour Benson said: “True peaceful, free and fair election is the only pre-requisites for democracy. Although polls have been a major source of conflict and crisis not only in Nigeria but in Africa, it will guarantee true democracy, if conducted peacefully.

“As an association, we stand by the National Peace Committee, NPC, led by a former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar in curbing violence in the Edo state governorship election.”

The association further cautioned security agents to be professional in the discharge of their election duties.

“Security agents should be professional in the discharge of their duties in Edo and avoid undue harassment of journalists covering the elections.

“In the processes of electing our leaders, we must continue to support the law enforcement agents in various polls to provide an atmosphere that will encourage a greater turnout.

“Peace is fundamental to economic development and the reports of insecurity and violence scare away investors.

“It must be noted that every society grows in response to the socio-cultural and political environments that create it, therefore, NAOSRE urges the Edo people and indeed Nigerians to embrace true peace in the Saturday poll,” she said

6. #EdoDecides2020: No Cause For Alarm, Says INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has reaffirmed the assurance by security agencies that everything is under control for a peaceful election in Edo.

GoldenNewsNg reports that Festus Okoye, National Commissioner in Charge of Information and Voter Education, told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN), Forum in Abuja that personal experience with elections had shown that sometimes those areas projected to be hotspots ended up becoming calm, while areas never anticipated to be violent might likely be the hotspots on election day.

“What the commission normally does is to project that all the areas that elections will be conducted must be secured, and that voters must have confidence that they can go out on election day to cast their ballots without any major challenge.’’

He said that the commission was in contact with the police hierarchy under the auspices of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security at the national level.

Okoye also said that the chairman of INEC and national commissioners had gone to Edo State twice over the security issue.

“We have had meetings with the state’s Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security chaired by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), and co-chaired by the Commissioner of Police. Read More here

7. Edo election is for the whole South South not just for Obaseki, says Wike

Rivers State Governor and key figure in the Edo State PDP campaign, Nyesom Wike, says the September 19 Governorship election in Edo state is for the entire South-South and not just about Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Wike, who made these statements while speaking on his achievements in an interview on African Independent Television(AIT) with Golden new Nigeria present,  said it is time for South South to speak with one voice.

Recall that before the defection of Governor Godwin Obaseki to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Edo state was the only state in South South under the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While assuring that the South South governors would rally behind the re-election of governor, Godwin Obaseki, he added that there would be no intimidation in the election, as the people of the state will be allowed to choose who govern them.

“Edo election is not an Obaseki election but for the people of the South South. Read More Here
