COVID-19 RRR Latest Update: FG Set to Commence Cash Disbursement

In today’s update on payments for the Rapid Response Register (RRR) on September 2, 2023, we have some important news about the RRR Payment including information about the N30,000 RRR Payment, the NASCCO COVID-19 RRR Second Batch Disbursement, and the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Update.

GoldenNewsNg reports that the Federal Government is getting ready to expand the National Social Register and start disbursing cash to people in need through the National Social Safety Nets Programme. This program was initiated by the previous administration.

This decision came after a meeting between the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, and the World Bank Country Director, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, in Abuja on Thursday.

The new Humanitarian Affairs Minister is following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which focuses on helping people in need. They plan to provide cash assistance to 15 million households through the updated Social Safety Net Project.

You might remember that the former Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development had announced the end of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme in November 2022. However, under the Tinubu administration led by Dr. Edu, they are committed to bringing back the program. They want to check who should receive this assistance, expand the National Social Register, and start giving out the $800 million that was proposed for the program.

During the meeting, they also discussed working together to host the Humanitarian Dialogue and creating the Renewed Hope Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund (HPATF). This trust fund will get money from the government’s budget, international partners, taxes, private sector contributions, and more.

The minister asked the World Bank for help in checking and expanding the National Social Register. She also asked for their technical support to meet the President’s goals.

In response, the World Bank Country Director promised to support the minister in achieving these goals. He confirmed that the $800 million for the Social Safety Nets Project will be distributed soon. They will also help with checking and expanding the National Social Register, provide technical support for the ministry’s work, and help establish the Trust Fund.

The Rapid Response Register (RRR) for COVID-19 Cash Transfer is a project supported by the World Bank and led by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development. Its goal is to find and register urban and semi-urban poor people who have lost income and become poorer because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The RRR Payment provides a one-time payment of N5,000 per month for six months, totaling N30,000.

The National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO) runs the Household Uplifting Programme (HUP), also known as the Conditional Cash Transfer. This program helps poor and vulnerable households in Nigeria by giving them N5,000 each month for six months. They are chosen based on their geographic location and community-based criteria to identify those in need.
