3. Recent Updates on the Cash Grant Program

As of September 2023, the Nigerian government is taking significant steps to expand the reach of the cash grant program. Dr. Betta Edu, responsible for poverty reduction initiatives, recently met with Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri from the World Bank in Abuja. They discussed various aspects of the program, including:

  • Expanding the list of beneficiaries.
  • Reinitiating the cash help program.
  • Allocating and disbursing the earmarked 800 million dollars for this initiative.

Additionally, they explored collaborations for events like the Humanitarian Dialogue and the creation of a special fund known as the Renewed Hope Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund. This fund will draw resources from various sources, including government budgets, international donations, taxes, and support from private companies. The World Bank has pledged its support to enlarge the list of beneficiaries and achieve the program’s objectives set by President Tinubu.

Lastly, the Rapid Response Register (RRR) program, assisted by the World Bank, was created by the federal humanitarian affairs department to aid urban residents adversely affected by COVID-19. These individuals will receive a total of N30,000, distributed as N5,000 monthly for six months. The National Cash Transfer Office’s objective is to provide regular financial assistance to impoverished families, particularly the most vulnerable in Nigeria.

In summary, these initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to reducing poverty and providing support to those in need, with a focus on urban areas and those affected by the ongoing pandemic.
