Gov Obaseki Reveals Why He Forgave Tony Kabaka

Governor Godwin Obaseki on Tuesday said those criticizing him for forgiving a political enforcer, Tony Adun popularly known as Tony Kabaka don’t understand the concept of forgiveness.

Governor argued that his supporters criticizing his move to forgive the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain are not his true supporters.

Obaseki made the submission on Tuesday while addressing leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oredo Local Government Area of the state over the reactions that followed his decision to forgive Kabaka and give him Christmas gifts.

Meanwhile, Kabaka got Christmas gifts of a cow and bags of rice from the Edo State government after he repented and begged for forgiveness.

It will be recalled that in February 2020, the Obaseki government had demolished the hotel belonging to Tony Kabaka which was located in the Ugbor area of Benin City.

However, some political watchers and stakeholders in Edo State seemed not pleased with the development.

Addressing the issue on Tuesday, Governor Obaseki said humility and forgiveness should be the hallmark of any politician and it must always be remembered that humanity comes before politics.

He added that he is merely a mortal who has also received forgiveness from God so why shouldn’t he forgive a fellow human being who has begged for forgiveness articularly at a time Christmas is being celebrated.

According to Obaseki, “since last night, I have been hearing lots of comments that I gave cow and rice to Kabaka. I read some people who said they are my supporters and I felt bad. I say they are not my supporters.

“This is Christmas, we are celebrating Christ, the basis of our Christianity and religion. Before politics, we are human beings, so if we cannot show humanity, then we will not be humble politicians.

“If a grandfather can come out in the social media to beg for forgiveness, go to church and begged for forgiveness, who am I not to forgive the person.

“I am a mere mortal. I am governor today because of God, so if I now play God I am not sure God will forgive me”, he said.

He said those condemning his action on social media are not Christians and should go ahead as he won’t rescind his decision.
