Germany has introduced the ‘Opportunity Card,’ a new initiative designed to attract skilled professionals from non-European Union (EU) countries.
This program aims to address labor shortages by welcoming qualified individuals from around the world.
Program Overview
With the launch of the Opportunity Card, Germany has also opened a portal for applications with Nigeria among the countries whose residents can apply for this program.
The Opportunity Card is a residence permit that allows individuals from third countries—those outside the EU—to enter Germany for the purpose of seeking employment.
The card is valid for up to one year and can be extended if the holder secures qualified employment.
This extension enables the individual to obtain a subsequent residence permit for further job searching or employment.
Eligibility for the Opportunity Card
Eligibility for the Opportunity Card is determined using a points-based system, which assesses your qualifications, knowledge, and circumstances. A minimum score of six points is required to qualify.
Basic Requirements
- Educational Background: Completion of a degree or at least two years of training recognized by the state of issuance.
- Language Proficiency: German language proficiency at least at level A1 or English proficiency at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Financial Means: Sufficient financial resources to cover living expenses for the duration of the stay in Germany. This typically requires proof of at least €1,027 per month, which can be demonstrated through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.
How to Apply
You can apply for the Opportunity Card online through the Consular Services Portal or locally at your nearest German mission.
Detailed instructions and further information are available on the respective websites of the German diplomatic missions.
This initiative provides a structured pathway for skilled professionals from non-EU countries to explore and secure employment opportunities in Germany.
By meeting the eligibility criteria and following the application process, qualified individuals can take advantage of this program to advance their careers in Germany.
