Steps To Start A School In Nigeria in 2025

Choose The Kind Of School You Want To Start

There are different types of schools in Nigeria. You have to choose the one you want to start. Some examples include:

• Nursery and Primary School
• Secondary School
• Day School Or Boarding School
• Private School Or Public School

If you are just starting, it is easier to begin with a nursery and primary school. Later, you can grow and add a secondary school or even a boarding school.

Pick A Good Location For Your School

The place where your school will be is very important. You must pick a safe and quiet area. The place should not be too far from where people live. It should be easy to find. Try to choose a location with many families and children. This will help you get more pupils. Also, make sure the land or building is not in a noisy or dangerous place.

Write A School Business Plan

A school business plan is a written plan that shows how you want to run your school. It explains your goals, how much money you need, and how you will get that money. It also shows how many teachers you need and how the school will make money.

Your school business plan should include the following:

• your school’s name and vision
• the type of school you want to open
• the location of the school
• the number of classes and pupils you want to start with
• how much money you will need to start
• where the money will come from
• how you plan to grow the school

If you do not know how to write a business plan, you can ask someone who does or look for simple samples online.

Register Your School With The Government

Every school in Nigeria must be registered with the government. If your school is not registered, it will not be allowed to operate. First, you must register your school name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). This will make your school a legal business.

After that, you must also register with the state ministry of education. Each state in Nigeria has its own rules. You may need to fill forms, submit some documents, and wait for approval. This process can take some time, so start early.

Get A Good Building And Make It Ready For Learning

Your school needs a good building. If you already have land, you can build your school from scratch. If not, you can rent or lease a building. The building must be strong, clean, and safe. It should have enough classrooms, a staff room, an office, toilets, and a small playground for young children.

You must also buy chairs, desks, tables, whiteboards, and other things pupils and teachers will use. Make sure everything is neat and arranged in a way that makes learning easy.

Hire Qualified Teachers And Workers

You cannot run a school alone. You will need teachers, cleaners, security guards, and office workers. Make sure you hire people who are trained and have experience. Your teachers must love children and be able to teach well. They must also have the right certificates.

The number of teachers you need depends on how many pupils and classes you have. Try to have one teacher for each class, and maybe a few others to help with other subjects like music, arts, or computer.

Create A School Curriculum

A school curriculum is a plan of what the pupils will learn. It includes all the subjects and topics for each class. In Nigeria, most private schools follow the national curriculum from the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

You can also add other subjects like computer studies, French, or practical skills if you want your school to stand out. Make sure your teachers know the curriculum and are ready to teach it well.

Choose A Good School Name And Logo

Your school needs a name that is easy to remember. The name should be unique and show what the school stands for. Avoid using names that are too long or hard to say. You can also design a school logo to make the school look more professional.

Your school name and logo will be on your signboard, uniforms, and documents, so choose them carefully.

Decide On School Fees

You must decide how much parents will pay for school fees. The fees must be fair and not too high. Look at what other schools in your area are charging. You do not want your fees to be too low that you cannot pay your staff or run the school. And you do not want it too high that parents cannot afford it.

Also, be clear on what the school fees cover. Does it include books, lunch, or uniforms? Make sure everything is written down and explained to parents.

Print Learning Materials And Forms

To make your school look ready, you need to prepare learning materials and forms. These include:

• Admission Forms
• Report Cards
• School Calendar
• Lesson Notes And Schemes
• School Rules And Policies

You can get help from a graphic designer or printer to make these look nice. This will help parents trust your school more.

Get School Uniforms

Most schools in Nigeria have uniforms. You can choose a simple and smart uniform for your pupils. You can also choose a different one for teachers. A school uniform gives the school a good look and makes pupils look neat and equal.

Try to work with a tailor or company that can supply the uniforms on time. Make sure the uniforms are affordable for parents.

Advertise Your School

After setting up your school, you must let people know about it. You can print flyers and share them in churches, markets, and streets. You can also use social media like Facebook and WhatsApp to reach more people.

Invite parents to come and visit the school. You can also offer discounts to the first few pupils who register. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors about the school. Word of mouth can really help you get more pupils.

Plan Your First School Term

Now that everything is ready, you need to plan your first term. This means:

• Choosing a start date
• Setting up the school timetable
• Training your teachers
• Getting pupils ready for class
• Making sure the classrooms are neat and ready

Also, plan how to welcome new pupils and their parents. The first impression matters a lot. Make the first day of school fun and well-organized.

Register Pupils

Before classes start, you must register pupils. Create a simple process for registration. Ask for things like:

• Birth certificate
• Passport photo
• Past school report (if any)
• Contact details of parents

Make sure you keep proper records. You can use a notebook or a computer to save everything.

Conclusion

Starting a school in Nigeria in 2025 is a big step. But it is possible if you follow the right steps. First, understand why you want to start the school. Then choose the type of school, find a good location, and create a strong plan. Register your school, hire good teachers, and create a great learning space.

Treat pupils and parents with care, and always try to improve. Step by step, your school can grow and become one of the best. Remember, you are not just starting a business. You are building the future of many children. Do your best and stay strong.
