How to Upgrade Prepaid Meter in Nigeria: A Comprehensive Guide

Are you a landlord or a tenant using an electricity prepaid meter in Nigeria? Have you heard about the upcoming need to upgrade your prepaid meter to ensure it functions effectively due to a new software launch? Are you eager to learn how to upgrade your meter effortlessly, without the need to enlist external assistance or incur additional costs? If your answer to these questions is affirmative, you have stumbled upon the right article. Please read on as we guide you through the meter upgrade process, making it hassle-free and accessible to everyone.

The Nigerian Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have announced that a nationwide software update will impact all prepaid meters in the country, commencing on November 24, 2024. This update will render meters unable to accept old tokens until they undergo the necessary upgrade.

Consequently, customers with prepaid meters are urged to carry out this upgrade, a straightforward process designed to enhance the security of prepaid power vending systems and ensure compliance with Token Identifier (TID) rollover standards.

4 Simple Steps to Upgrade Your Meter:

Step 1: Acquire KCT Tokens:

Visit any of the DISCOs’ offices to request KCT tokens if you haven’t received them during your initial vending after August 1, 2023.

Step 2: Load KCT 1 Token:

Ensure your meter is powered on. Enter the first Key Change Token (KCT1) into your meter using the keypad or the meter’s user interface (UIU, CIU). Once successfully accepted, your meter may display ‘successful,’ ‘2,’ or a ‘blank space.’

Step 3: Load KCT 2 Token:

Enter the second Key Change Token (KCT2) into your meter using the same method as before. Once successfully accepted, your meter may show ‘ok’ or ‘good.’

Step 4: Load Energy Token:

If you have also purchased a vending token, enter it into your meter after loading the KCT tokens to complete the upgrade process. Congratulations! You have successfully upgraded your meter.

Final Thoughts

We strongly recommend upgrading your meter as soon as possible to ensure token compatibility and to avoid any potential issues. Keep in mind that you must input the KCT tokens one at a time as indicated, and it is crucial to use only the provided KCT tokens for the meter upgrade process.

By following these four simple steps, you can seamlessly upgrade your prepaid meter, ensuring its continued functionality and compliance with the latest software updates. This proactive approach will not only enhance your meter’s performance but also contribute to a more secure and efficient electricity consumption experience in Nigeria. Don’t delay; upgrade your prepaid meter today!
